Republicans racked up big wins in more than a dozen state legislatures this fall \u2014 and now they\u2019re planning to use their expanded power to crack down on abortions come January.<\/p>\n
With sweeping abortion legislation having little chance in a divided Congress, conservative state legislators are stepping into the void, proposing to limit when the procedure can take place, enact new regulations on abortion pills and strengthen penalties for doctors who break the law. Taken together, the legislation could make it harder for tens of millions of people to obtain abortions \u2014 particularly in Southern states that still permit most abortions, like Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, which have become havens for access since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade<\/i>.<\/p>\n
