But neither disavowed Graham\u2019s substantive position about when abortion should be legal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">And why would they? The party\u2019s official position is that life begins at conception, that abortion is murder and that the law should treat it as such. It\u2019s been that way for nearly 50 years and it was that way in 2016, which is the last time the GOP had an official platform. While the agenda is short on any specifics or proposals, it\u2019s not hard to fill in the blanks. Speaking to Axios, Representative <strong>Bob Good<\/strong> approvingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/09\/23\/house-republicans-agenda-gamble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> that there is a \u201cstrong majority\u201d of House Republicans cosponsoring the Life at Conception Act, which would define life as beginning at the moment of fertilization, effectively making abortion illegal. (The bill currently has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/1011\/cosponsors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">166 cosponsors<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Read more at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2022\/09\/house-republicans-committment-to-america-agenda-abortion\">Vanity Fair<\/a><\/p>\n<p>House GOP Platform Uses Shorthand For Extreme Anti-Abortion Position<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">One of the most notable planks in the plan reads: \u201cProtect the lives of unborn children and their mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The phrase \u201cunborn children\u201d is often shorthand for the concept of \u201cfetal personhood,\u201d the anti-abortion stance that fetuses are essentially just small children, and have rights under the 14th Amendment. Fetal personhood laws would push past the abortion bans that are now in place in many red states, and reclassify the procedure as murder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Read more at <a href=\"https:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/news\/house-gop-platform-abortion-fetal-personhood\">Talking Points Memo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So Much for States\u2019 Rights: Republicans Are Eyeing a National Abortion Ban<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">But, as <em>The<\/em> <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/09\/07\/these-republicans-cheered-abortion-policy-going-states-they-are-also-sponsoring-federal-ban\/\">pointed out<\/a> last week, that hasn\u2019t stopped Republicans like Buck and Graham from expressing support for a national abortion ban \u2014\u00a0a sweeping invasion of privacy that would seem to trample over state sovereignty. As <strong>Pramila Jayapal<\/strong>, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/1569687341580664832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/1569687341580664832\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/1569687341580664832&quot;}\">wrote<\/a> Tuesday, \u201cOverturning Roe was never about giving power back to states.
