According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, only 16 of Alabama\u2019s 54 rural counties have hospitals providing obstetric services. Seven counties have <a class=\" js-tealium-tracking \" href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.edu\/medicine\/magazine\/spring-2021\/maternal-mortality-in-black-and-white-seeking-lifesaving-solutions-for-an-enduring-disparity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tracking=\"mpos=&amp;mid=&amp;lindex=&amp;lcol=\">no hospitals at all<\/a>. As of 2020, 40 percent of the state was considered a <a class=\" js-tealium-tracking \" href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/life-sciences-and-health-care\/articles\/march-of-dimes-maternity-care-deserts-dashboard.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tracking=\"mpos=&amp;mid=&amp;lindex=&amp;lcol=\">\u201cmaternity care desert\u201d<\/a> with virtually no access to services in 25 counties and low access in another 21. The closures have taken a toll.
