Trump Claims He’ll “Never” Call for Restricting Birth Control, After Saying He’s “Looking at” Restricting Birth Control

In an interview on Pittsburgh’s KDKA news station, Trump was asked, “Do you support any restrictions on a person’s right to contraception?” And his answer was not a resounding “no.” Instead, he responded: “We’re looking at that, and I’m gonna have a policy on that very shortly, and I think it’s something that you’ll find interesting. And it’s another issue that’s very interesting, but you will find it, I think, very smart; I think it’s a smart decision. But we’ll be releasing it very soon.”

Democrats and Republicans keep colliding over contraception

“The policy agenda of the Republican Party is being accomplished in the states and it looks like abortion bans, it looks like bans on contraception, it looks like bans or challenges to IVF and personhood — this is what they’re about,” DLCC President Heather Williams told The 19th.

Trump and Republicans Are Not Pro-Pill, No Matter What They Say

But regardless of how swiftly Trump and his team backtracked on the remarks, the idea of restricting or even banning contraceptives is not a new platform for Republicans. You can see a list of some Republicans who have shown public support for that idea in a list I made this week.

And even though Trump said he will never support restricting contraception, it’s hard to take that at face value when he did just that while he was in office. During his first round of staffing in the White House, Trump hired people who opposed legal contraception, a new piece by Salon laid out.
