The House just passed a defense bill with controversial abortion, LGBTQ measures. It doesn’t stand a chance in the Senate.
The typically bipartisan bill dissolved into a nearly GOP-only measure Thursday as ugly fights over abortion, transgender medical care and diversity programs that have shown up in other bills in the House took center stage. As the rightward tilt became clear on the House floor, Smith and other Democrats who had previously supported the NDAA in the Armed Services Committee derided the revamped bill as “an ode to bigotry and ignorance.”

The legislation came under fire from Democrats after a number of GOP-sponsored amendments regarding abortion, transgender rights, diversity and inclusion initiatives and other hot-button issues were attached. In a sign of the widespread Democratic opposition, the top three leaders in the caucus came out against the legislation late Thursday night.

Military service members had out-of-state abortion costs covered. The House just voted to eliminate that.
“This would enact a dangerous health care travel ban,” Sherrill said on the House floor. “Service members signed up to put their lives on the line for our freedoms, our national values, our constitutional rights. They did not sign up to put their lives on the line or their spouses’ lives on the line because they cannot get access to basic care.”
